Volunteering: Your Experience Matters

Independent living communities cater to seniors who are self-reliant but want to enjoy a sense of community as well as the option of a wide range of services such as housekeeping, fitness facilities and meal plans.

They offer seniors the opportunity to have their own home or apartment and many follow a hospitality model meaning that they have services available if you need them. Just as a concierge at a hotel, you decide what services you would like to take advantage of. They also encourage social and fitness activities and many have amenities such as golf courses, swimming pools and fitness classes.

Assisted Living

Assisted Living

Assisted living residences are designed for seniors who do not feel comfortable living on their own and may require support services such as personal care, meals, medication management, and transportation.

They offer their residents a high degree of independence but also provide help with those that need support for some daily activities and/or limited nursing assistance.   Among some of the standard services are a range of dining options, 24-hour emergency call systems, social activities and a menu of housekeeping and personal care assistance services. Many also offer health and wellness programs and a variety of classes led by qualified staff.

Finding out that a loved one has Dementia or Alzheimer’s disease can be devastating. Dementia can present a wide range of symptoms associated with a decline in memory or other thinking skills severe enough to reduce a person's ability to perform everyday activities.

Memory care communities are licensed facilities staffed by professionals who are specifically trained to provide care to Alzheimer’s and Dementia patients. The care provided can be similar to what is offered in an assisted living community and can include help with activities of daily living such as bathing, dressing and medication management. Most memory care communities provide private or semi-private units, meals, housekeeping, access to 24/7 nursing and medical treatment plans, social activities and transportation to doctor’s appointments and other outings.

Skilled nursing facilities provide 24-hour care for seniors that don’t require hospitalization but can’t be cared for at home. The staff can provide medical care as well as physical, speech and occupational therapy. Some facilities also offer specialized care for people who suffer from severe memory loss.

Many facilities also provide short-term rehabilitative stays following a surgery, illness or injury. Some nursing homes are set up like a hospital with nursing stations on each floor. Other nursing facilities try to be more like home and have more of a neighborhood feel.
